Ghost of Ashwood

AB/CD/30/Road      Jeff Thomas, Brian Staiger                  Link

A first time ride for the COW's.

Travel through high desert canyons and over rolling ranch lands.

From Dirty Freehub's "Ghost of Ashwood" write-up:  "You’ll cycle past majestic cliffs, some of basalt and others painted an array of colors. You’ll travel past the Polka Dot Agate Mine, too, where you might stumble across some beautiful polka dot agates and canyon rim thunder eggs, Oregon’s state rock."

There are some real, live folks who live in the area. These folks have created a little store of sorts at the old post office that offers an assortment of snacks for cyclists who pass through. They have also set up a picnic and tenting spot with pit toilets. How cool is that? No one operates the store; it is self-help (i.e. on the honor system). In the spirit of Ashwood’s spectral image, feel free to imagine that the proprietor is indeed a ghost. To thank the ghost for his kindness, consider leaving an extra donation in the collection box.

McDonalds in Madras will serve as a meeting point to caravan out to the start of the ride.  As there are not any bathrooms at the start of this ride, McDonalds is a perfect place to stop.  Plan on meeting at McD's at 9:00 am at which point Jeff will take off at 9:10,  Brian will wait til 9:20 am for any late arrivals.

This is an Out and Back ride of 30 total miles with 3200' of elevation change.

  • Start of ride Address: U.S. 97 & Northeast Pony Butte Road via US-97 N.
    (15 mi)

Jeff Thomas will ride along with the C/D group, while Brian Staiger will ride with the A/B group. The plan will be to let the C/D get a 15 min head start and all riders will meet at the top of the climb at the 11 mile point.  From that point we will ride the downhill into the Town of Ashwood together.  Be sure to bring a bit of cash for the store donation.

PLEASE NOTE: Map indicates unpaved road, that is not true, it is paved, but rough.  Riders may want to take a bit of pressure out of tires for a more comfortable ride.  E-bikes are acceptable.
