Painted Hills

Mitchell, OR

October 11

Registration will close down by Wednesday, October 4th.

For the last three years there have been a number of Central Oregon Wheelers that have taken on the Famous Twickenham or Priest hole (gravel) loops in the Painted Hills region.  October is a wonderful time of the year to take on these challenging rides.  This year we would like to expand our pilgrimage east.  The Wheelers are offering up a 2 day adventure with road (w/SAG support), gravel riding and hanging!

Dates: October 11 Day 1

Road Ride:

Twickenham-67 mi, Beautiful ride down Gist Creek Canyon and across the John Day River.  There will be a lunch stop at Historic Service Creek Stage coach stop.  Of course if you would like to pack your own lunch it can be stored in a cooler in Marc's trailer.  We will meet at Mitchell City Park (which has bathrooms if you would like to change into your cycling clothes).  Please meet by 9:45 AM and be ready to ride by 9:30 AM.  Note: The drive out to Mitchell takes roughly 2 hrs.  There will be 4 scheduled SAG stops roughly 12 - 15 miles apart.

Probable Gravel Rides:

PRIEST HOLE WILL BE OUR DAY 1 GRAVEL RIDE!!!!!!!

Priest Hole,  Loop, 42 miles, 50/50% grave/paved, 3500' - https://dirtyfreehub.org/routes/oregon/priest-hole/

Six Shooter, Loop, 48 miles, 40/60 gravel paved, 4400' - https://dirtyfreehub.org/routes/oregon/six-shooter/

Mitch & Walt, 53 miles, 60/40 gravel/paved, 4800'  (w/o popsicle stick) - https://dirtyfreehub.org/routes/oregon/mitch-wa

We can make a decision amongst the registered gravel riders which of the rides we will do.

Our Road Rides will be supported by Marc McConnell for both days (Summit Cycling Adventures) and 50% of the cost will come from the registered rider, the remaining from the club.  Marc's trailer is professionally stocked with water, Liquid IV's, nutritious snacks, pop-cycles, tools, charging stations, ice and the list goes on..... Marc can also SAG up to 8 bikes at a time.  Day one Twickenham will be lunch on your own at Service Creek.  Day two to Thomas Condon Paleo Center and lunch will be provided by Summit Cycling Adventures.

Marc is tentatively planning a trip after dinner out to the John Day Monument to catch the sunset at 6:25 pm.  No we will not be riding our bikes there.

Gravel Rides are non-supported.
