Pace Line Clinic

This clinic will be rescheduled

with Brian Staiger and Colin DuPlantis

Have you ever wondered that after your first 15 secs. of a pull on a pace line why you were so far out in front of everyone and had to be called back.  YOU are not alone.  This is a very common mistake that riders new to the most efficient mode of road cycling has to offer - the pace line.

Riding pace line can be very fun and rewarding for the entire group.  It can also be very demoralizing if not done correctly.  Join Colin and Brian at the Cascades Lakes Highway Visitor Center with your bike ready to ride for a hour and a half clinic.  After a brief introduction we will take to the bike path and practice the skills necessary to enjoy an efficient pace line.  If time we will then venture out Conklin Rd. in small 4-5 person pace lines.

This is a great article to give you an overview of the pace line.  "Become a pro with pacelines with this visual guide"

Unregister yourself from a ride

Registration Is Required

  1. Pace line:  Discuss IF we will and where we will pace line and briefly discuss pace line guidelines

    1. No pulls for any longer than 2-3 min (don’t like to pull, take it for 10 secs, but let the rider behind know that ahead of time).  Pull longer not harder, pull shorter not slower.  The worst thing you can do is pull so hard you drop yourself!

    2. When it is your chance to pull “MAINTAIN” group pace, Pull with the idea you are pacing the middle of the pack pace.  The pull should stay on line with a constant pedal stroke.  No surprises as those surprises get amplified down the pace line.

    3. “NO GAPS” always fill

    4. If it is not your day then hang in the middle of the pace line, by signaling riders behind to pass safely.

    5. Use signal and caution before you peel off the front of the pace line.

    6. Indicate with a double elbow flick, or a verbal command “standing” before you rise out of the saddle.  This will always lead to a slight change of pace. Make this a smooth transition, not a jerk backward.

    7. Any hill pace line should be at the middle of the pack pace.

    8. Hand signals to communicate from Front of line to Back of line.

    9. Verbal communication from Back of line to Front of line.  “Mechanical”, “Off Back”, “Back On”, “Soft pedal”, “All On”, “Biker down”, “Car Back”, “Bikers Back”
