This ride connects two very interesting geological formations created by very violent events. I will give you some information about these events although I am not a geologist.

The ride is easy with a few but short hills (5 to 6%). We will be on 12.9 miles of good gravel roads and 7.1 miles of firm double tracks. I am using 700cx50mm tires, but 40mm will work as well. Tubeless tires are a must.

Hopefully it will not be hazy when riding since the views are spectacular. Because the area was covered by a lake 200 feet deep 20,000 years ago, parts of the ride are quite flat but a significant portion of the course goes through rolling hills in a forest.

Bring plenty of water and some food. There is a restaurant in the little town of Fort Rock, but you will have to order burgers and fries or you will starve.

To get there, go south on Hwy 97 past La Pine, to Hwy 31 going east. Drive 29 miles and turn left on County Rd 5-10. Drive 6 miles to Fort Rock and turn left on Cabin Lake Rd. Drive a mile to the end of the pavement, turn left on County Rd 5-11A (Cow Cave Rd) to the Fort Rock Trail head which has good parking and clean toilets. It takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes from Bend to get there.

There is a very interesting museum in Fort Rock with old homestead buildings and beautiful Native American artifacts. It is worth spending an hour there. I hope you join me on this fun ride...especially if you are a geologist! Michel
