Cline Falls-Smith Rock Loop

One of prettiest local rides, this week’s ride is a 30 mile route that starts in Cline Falls Picnic Area, goes north through Redmond, then east to Smith Rock State Park and then loops back to Cline Falls. The ride is mostly on rural roads, with the except of crossing Highways 126 and 97. The views on this ride are just great!

Interesting, this route is right in the middle of the Crooked River caldera – a super volcano that erupted about 30 million years ago. The caldera is 17 miles by 25 miles in size and is one of the 10 largest in the world. It includes Smith Rocks, Steins Pillar and Twin Pillars. Even for such a large caldera, it wasn’t discovered until 2005 because it doesn’t look like Crater Lake or Newberry crater. Two well know calderas just down the road.
