This has been MOVED TO FRIDAY in hopes of good weather.

Welcome to Progressive Wednesday rides... the fourth in a series of weekly rides each a bit longer than the previous. This week’s progressive ride is a 34 mile route that starts at Cline Falls State Park, goes north through Redmond to Terrebonne, east to Smith Rock State Park and then loops back to our starting point. The ride is mostly on rural roads, with the except of crossing Highways 126 and 97.

Interesting, Smith Rock State Park is part of the Crooked River caldera – a super volcano that erupted about 30 million years ago. The caldera is 17 miles by 25 miles in size and is one of the 10 largest in the world. Besides Smith Rocks, the caldera includes the Crooked Rock Canyon, Steins Pillar and Twin Pillars. Even for such a large caldera, it wasn’t discovered until 2005 because it doesn’t look like Crater Lake or Newberry crater. Two well know calderas just down the road.

The objective of the progressive rides is to prepare riders for the longer rides like the Tour the Des Chutes or the Firecracker 100 by increasing ride length every week. Rides will take place in the Tumalo and China Hat road areas, and other areas outside of Bend/Tumalo, like the Crooked River Canyon, Lake Billy Chinook (Madras Mountain Views), or Sisters areas. These rides are a great way to increase endurance, meet new friends, learn about new ride routes, and enjoy the scenic beauty of rural of Oregon.
