River Canyon to China Hat Out-n-Back

This 30 mile ride is the 3rd in a weekly series of ever increasingly longer rides with the intent of improving rider endurance. Rides are every Tuesday and ride length will generally increase by about 5 miles a week.

This week's ride is a 30-mile route that starts at River Canyon Park off Brookswood Road, rides through the quiet Deschutes River Woods neighborhood, then out Knotts and China Hat Roads. We'll turn around at the end of the paved section of China Hat and follow the same route back to River Canyon Park.

Knotts Road can be busy, but that portion is short. China Hat is probably one of the prettiest rides in the area and includes great views of several parasitic volcanic cones associated with Newberry Crater, one of the largest calderas in the US. The Three Sisters, as well as other Cascade volcanoes, are also visible on the ride. Also of interest is Boyd Cave, part of the Arnold Ice Cave system, which can be found near the end of the paved section of China Hat Road. This lava tube system is also associated with Newberry Crater. 

The objective of the Progressive Tuesday rides is to prepare riders for the longer rides like the Tour the De Chutes or the Firecracker 100. Rides will take place in the Tumalo and China Hat road areas, and other areas outside of Bend/Tumalo, like the Crooked River Canyon, Lake Billy Chinook (Madras Mountain Views), Sisters areas. These rides are a great way to increase endurance, meet new friends, learn about new ride routes, and enjoy the scenic beauty of rural of Oregon.
