Union to Baker Loop

Update:

The weekend of our tour is “graduation weekend.” This timing is of concern to us because there is virtually no hotel availability on our planned weekend. Another option exists fortunately. We will begin our tour in Union instead of La Grande. This will shorten our route on Saturday and Sunday (June 17th and 18th) to about 45 miles each day. We will still stay Saturday night in Baker City. The route on these two days will leave a second loop of about 40 miles undone. To ensure that we complete the entire scenic bikeway, there will be an optional 40-mile ride on Friday afternoon, leaving from and returning to Union.

Most importantly, we will avoid a difficult 70-plus mile day. Having a shorter day on Sunday will also make it much easier to return to Bend on that day. Hopefully, everyone can do the Friday ride, which will start at 2:00 p.m. With an early start from Bend, driving to Union by that time should not be an issue. Of course, you can still do the two-day weekend ride if you choose not to ride on Friday.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, you should book accommodation in Union for Friday night, the 16th--Sunday night as well if you intend to stay there after the ride on Sunday. The accommodation in Union is extremely limited (5/5/17): I have found only two options. The most appealing appears to be the Historic Union Hotel. You can visit the hotel’s website at http://thehistoricunionhotel.com/index.php I recently called the hotel, and they had enough rooms to accommodate all of us but not by many! The hotel also has a small RV park if that is an option for you. In addition, you should book a hotel in Baker City for Saturday, the 17th. There are options there. I suggest the Best Western Sunridge Inn. This hotel gets generally favorable reviews and is convenient to the cycling route. If you would like to stay somewhere else, your choice can be accommodated.
